Body Awareness, Line & Underwaters Edition

A RaceBetter Technical Workshop
with Coaches Ben Lee & João Mescolote

April 25-26, 2026 | Brittingham-Midtown Aquatic Center (BMAC)

Most swimmers spend thousands of hours in the water — yet very few truly understand how their body moves through it at race speed.

Speed in swimming isn’t just about working harder. It’s about learning how to feel connected in the water, apply pressure at the right moments, and transfer power efficiently while minimizing drag.

This two-day RaceBetter clinic focuses on three areas that influence nearly every race:

  • Body Awareness
  • Body Line
  • Underwaters

Through a progression of classroom learning, dryland connection work, and in-water application, athletes will explore how posture, breathing, and timing influence underwater dolphin kicks, breakouts, and the first few stroke cycles coming off the wall.

When swimmers begin to understand and feel these connections, small adjustments can unlock meaningful improvements in speed, efficiency, and confidence.

Our goal is simple:

Help swimmers better understand how their body moves through the water — and give them tools they can continue applying long after the clinic ends.

A complimentary Parent SessionSupporting Your Developing Athlete 101 is included with all two-day athlete registrations.

WHAT MAKES RACEBETTER CLINICS DIFFERENT

Many clinics focus primarily on repeating drills or watching elite swimmers demonstrate technique. RaceBetter clinics are designed differently.

Our goal isn’t just to show what fast swimming looks like — but to help athletes understand why certain movements create speed and how to reproduce them consistently.

Education First

Athletes learn how to observe and analyze movement so they can understand what creates speed and continue improving long after the clinic ends.

Land → Water Integration

Movement patterns are introduced on land before being applied in the water, helping swimmers feel how posture, coordination, and connection translate into propulsion.

Adaptation Over Imitation

Elite swimmers provide valuable examples, but mechanics rarely transfer 1:1. Athletes learn the key principles behind effective movement and how to adapt them to their own body.

THE RACEBETTER METHOD

RaceBetter clinics follow a progression designed to help athletes understand, feel, and apply the skills being taught.

This approach reflects years of work with swimmers at every level — from developing age-group athletes to Olympic and international performers.

Understand the Skill

We begin by studying race footage and technical examples from elite swimmers to understand what effective movement looks like and why it works. Athletes learn to recognize key patterns behind fast swimming and how to adapt those ideas to their own body and racing style.

Build the Connection

Next we translate these ideas into movement on land. Our warmup progresses from general preparation to CNS activation and swim-specific patterns so swimmers begin to feel the posture, coordination, and connections that support efficient movement in the water.

Apply It in the Water

Finally, athletes apply these concepts in the pool through guided drills and technical feedback. Each phase builds on the previous one so swimmers can experiment, feel immediate feedback, and discover the movement solutions that work best for their own body.

Why These Skills Matter

Many swimmers train extremely hard but struggle to understand why certain movements create speed while others slow them down.

This clinic focuses on the underlying mechanics that influence performance many racing situations.

Mechanics We Focus On

  • posture and alignment
  • pressure application in the water
  • breathing rhythm and timing
  • underwater propulsion and efficiency
  • connection between push-offs, breakouts, and stroke cycles

What Athletes Often Improve

  • efficiency
  • consistency
  • race awareness and strategy
  • confidence in the water
  • long-term development

Supporting Your Developing Athlete 101

A Parent Conversation

The environment around a swimmer often shapes their development just as much as the training itself.

Raising a swimmer is about far more than times, medals, or meet results. This session is designed to help parents better understand how their words, actions, and expectations shape an athlete’s confidence, motivation, and long-term development—both in and out of the pool.

We’ll explore practical strategies around communication, mindset, and ownership, along with age-appropriate ways to support growth throughout the season and across an athlete’s career.

Some of the questions we’ll discuss include:

  • What language supports confidence and resilience—and what unintentionally adds pressure?
  • When should I ask questions, and when is it better to listen or simply support?
  • What should we celebrate during different phases of the season—and why results aren’t always the answer?
  • How does athlete ownership evolve as swimmers get older, and what is my role along that continuum?
  • How can parents support nutrition, hydration, and recovery without creating stress or control battles?

We’ll also discuss the “three-legged stool” of athlete development—athletes, coaches, and parents—and how alignment between those roles creates healthier, more durable performers.

The goal is not perfection, but clarity, consistency, and shared expectations.

Parents will leave with practical ideas they can immediately apply to better support their swimmer’s growth, enjoyment of the sport, and long-term success.

Private Lessons (Day 1 - following the Athlete Session)

Start: ~1:15–1:30pm
Duration: 20 minutes per swimmer
Price: $100 per session
Eligibility: Available to athletes registered for the 2-Day clinic

Time selection will be coordinated through a Google Sheet shared with registered swimmers 1-week prior to the event.

20-minute sessions (time selection shared via Google Sheet prior to the event)

These sessions provide swimmers with individualized coaching and real-time video feedback, allowing us to closely examine each athlete’s movement.

Athletes may choose any stroke or skill they would like to work on. Based on our experience, 20 minutes typically allows time to focus deeply on one key skill (occasionally two) so swimmers leave with clear feedback and practical adjustments they can continue practicing.

Because lessons take place immediately following the Day 1 athlete sessions, availability is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Who This Clinic Is For

This clinic is recommended for swimmers who:

  • have at least two years of competitive swimming experience
  • want to better understand how technique influences speed
  • are motivated to improve their racing and training habits

Swimmers under age 10 should attend only with approval from their coach.
